#160: Victim Blaming Par Excellence: Russia Complains About Those Helping Ukraine

Russia is complaining that the West is “prolonging” the war unnecessarily by helping Ukraine out with weaponry. This is quite outrageous – the aggressor, who in 2014 attacked an innocent country it was bound to protect (due to the Budapest Memorandum), stole part of its territory (Crimea and Donbas), and has now been waging an all-out invasion to commit genocide, is complaining about those who have come to the victim’s help?

There is only one country that can end this war – Russia. Withdraw from all Ukrainian territory, return the Donbas and Crimea, pay reparations for every single bit of damage, and rid yourself from the fascist system erected by Putin – and maybe in a few decades, you will be readmitted to civilization.

In the meantime, the West needs to do everything to help Ukraine and boost European security against this naked and unprovoked aggression. Are we in favor of a system advancing nothing but violence or lies, which violates even the semblance of decency and justice, which awards medals to those who just committed massacres on a peaceful civilian population? Can we now finally see a difference between the barbarism committed by Putin’s Russia (and similarly systemically brutal dictatorships) and an imperfect West? Democracy is certainly not perfect – but compared to this?

If we do not help Ukraine in the coming weeks, months, years, we are complicit in genocide. We all – or at least those with a positive vision for humanity – we all swore to “never again” allow genocide to be committed – and we failed several times already. Will we fail again by losing interest again? Will we shy away from standing up to a tyrant bent on genocide? Putin wants to destroy Ukraine as a country, he wants to destroy the Ukrainians as a people – will we let this happen? Or will we do what we can to show that tyranny cannot be allowed to win?

Make no mistake about this: Putin means all of us. He has said so repeatedly. One Russian world, from Lisbon to Vladivostok, is that what we want? And do we really believe that the United States and all our allies will be spared? This needs to stop in Ukraine, and our message needs to be clear. This aggression must not succeed. Justice must prevail. Sic Semper Tyrannis.

Ceterum censeo Ucrainam esse defendam. Слава Україні!
